The Governor's Wife (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Not as good as his previous books in my opinion. A big portion of this book is dedicated to the political activities of the Texas Governor, and while I don't mind that in principal it is not really fascinating the way it is handled by the author. Rather boring I am afraid to say. I would certainly recommend Richard North Patterson, if political novels are your favorite books. Also the story line I find rather weak. I became a big fan of Mark Gimenez after reading his first books, but this one I hope to forget soon. I still believe the author can recover from this setback and I am looking forward to his next novel which I am sure I will read again with high anticipation. The book starts out well with the Anglo nurse treating the sick in the colonias on the “wrong” side of the border. As the book progresses, it is revealed that the nurse if Lindsay Bonner, wife of Texas governor, Bode Bonner. Both characters are fairly bored in the relationship and seek out adventure in their own ways: Bode – by targeting the White House as his next stop, Lindsay – by running away to “make her life meaningful”. In the colonias resides the Harvard educated larger-than-life Dr. Jesse Rincon – who becomes the third leg in this love triangle; and the mafia lord El Diablo – who is the villain.*** SPOILER ALERT ***The plot is interesting to start with, but becomes cheesy and bad-romantic-Hindi-movie-like somewhere in the middle. The politics are interesting, more so with the manipulative Jim Bob! However, it seemed too far-fetched at several points, esp. with the hero redeeming himself at the end just by coming across the border to save his wife. The doctor is conveniently disposed of to remove any hint of conflict in the mind of the Governor’s Wife, who then rides into sunset to live happily ever-after with the husband.Gimenez has often been called the Grisham of today’s times. However, this book disappoints!
