The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building A Business When There Are No Easy Answers (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Maybe my expectations were too high, being a big fan of a16z and Ben, but the book only wins 3 stars from me. Great contents are loosely connected, scattered all over the book and because of this, it was a bit hard to concentrate on the book. However, the core of the book is excellent - I have to admire the experiences and tough decisions that Ben had to make, and a lot of the stuff actually sent me digging up memories and reflecting upon many (too many) mistakes and bad decisions that I had personally made (and also making today) Everyone talks about Ben being a management guru, and the reason it's true is through his story we hear the honest truth of the difficulties of running a business. What to do at different stages of a company, with missing information, lack of knowledge on functions that aren't your strengths and how to deal with them, the balance of results and relationships needed to maintain a high performing organization, to sell or not to sell, etc. The most valuable insight is his emotional reflection of events and situations and the decisions he had to make as a CEO that paint of picture "it's not easy running a company."The lessons in Hard Things about Hard things are indeed hard and on point, but reading this book is easy and I can't wait to re-read it in the near future.
