The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Wow, this was depressing. In spite of how sad the majority of this story was, I did really enjoy it. I wish I spoke Korean so I could read this original story since I'm sure it loses a lot of its beauty in translation.Honestly, my first thought when I read this was,"Well, I'll never be able to eat chicken again." The treatment of the animals was heart-wrenching and not what I expected in a fable. I've become such an animal activist that I just couldn't stand some of the scenes; however, what made this story so beautiful was how hopeful Sprout remained from the very first page to the very last. I just wanted to hug that sweet little chicken and go on a weasel-massacre. It's a short, lovely read and I recommend it to literature lovers, particularly those who wish to step outside of their go-to genres and diversify their reading. This is also a beautiful edition - just look at that cover! What a beautiful book this is!Essentially this is a book about having the strength to be who we want to be, to seize opportunities, to love and yet set free. A story about bravery, determinedness, and love. It looks touches on so many aspects of being human it is hard to believe it is about a hen. It is about a mother who cannot have children of her own, about how we treat those who are different to us, and about having the strength and bravery to go for the life we want.It isn't often as adults we read books with animals as the characters, I loved that this one had. It also made me very glad we buy free range eggs. This book is a best seller in Korea and I can see why, it is simple but beautiful.
