The Hueys In The New Jumper (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

This book reminds me of those various teenagers who dress up as Goths or as Punks for some reason - perhaps they want to thumb their noses at the older generation or at authority; perhaps they want to be different to everybody else - but they all look the same as each other. Maybe that's what this author was thinking about when he wrote this children's book. The Hueys all look exactly the same, and do everything exactly the same, until one day one of them knits a jumper. Shock, horror! He's ostracised. Except by one other Huey who thinks it looks quite good, and knits one of his own - exactly the same, of course. And then they ALL want to look different (in exactly the same way).Zenobia had this book for her Challenge and drew a wonderful picture in response of several Hueys all looking exactly the same. I'm not sure if she got the story / message / punch-line (as it were), but she enjoyed it. And she enjoyed my gales of laughter. I think this book is one of those wonderfully subversive books that affect children's thinking without them knowing it. I read this book in the library because I'm a knitter and what knitter could resist a silly story about a new jumper! The story is quite sweet; all of the Hueys look alike so one decides to knit himself a jumper to be different, then all of the Hueys want to be different so they all knit themselves the exact same jumper. The drawings are really simple (it looks like the whole book might have been drawn in 10 minutes) but that adds to the charm of the story :)
