This true story is written nearly like a novel. Rebecca Skloot spent years researching newspapers and journals, interviewing scientists of several countries and family members of Henrietta Lacks. The story is not only a story of Henrietta and her family, it is a history of cultural, scientific and humanitarian changes in this country over 50-60 years. Henrietta's cervical cancer cells have not only produced international studies for cell research, disease cures and cancer causes, they have helped to formulate privacy protocols, legal standings and improved scientific standards for research. I must thank Ms. Skloot for her persistence and diligence in preparing for this book and thank God for her special skills in making it such a readable book. This book is for any reader, no need to be a scholar or scientist to understand it. I would recommend it to all. A friend of mine invited me to read this with her and then go to her school book club to discuss it. I put it off until the day of the book club because I was reading a million other things for school this semester. Thankfully, it was engaging enough to sit and read in one sitting. I ended up with all kinds of thoughts and ideas swirling in my head and I think we needed a far longer meeting to discuss it all, and I need more time than I have right now to give it a proper review, but it was very interesting to read about how these immortal cells, unintentionally left behind, have changed the world as we know it, but the kids that Henrietta intentionally brought in to the world have struggled and ceased to thrive. She has unknowingly saved lives but even her all powerful immortal cells could not save her own children from their own poor use of agency.

Funny and maddening at the same time. A little hard to follow, but difficult to put down.
