The Impostor's Daughter: A True Memoir (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
3.5 satars I liked this presentation, thick pages and fun, colorful illustrations. A memoir is unlikely to be written unless there something out of the ordinary and in this case that something was Laurie’s father.Laurie’s father was a liar/hot head/bully/thief and as Laurie became old enough to understand that he wasn’t the multi-diploma, Green Beret, spy that she thought he was her life fell apart. As most young adults with Daddy issues she tried some ill-advised activities until she started to take charge of her life.I didn’t love Laurie, mainly because I didn’t understand her need to ‘out’ her father in a story so publicly. I became engrossed in her story but never warmed up to her (at least the graphic her) so this book was both good and bad for me. More than just fun to read, though it was, one word kept popping into my mind as I read Laurie Sandell's memoir: "brave." Her story was so honest, often raw & unflattering, that it created in me a sort of curious respect for the author. Speaking of curious, though, there was something that bothered me about "The Impostor's Daughter," and that's Laurie's father. I kept reading ravenously, in part because it's a graphic novel, and pretty pictured pages are so easy to flip, but more than that, I wanted answers about this guy. I wanted the name of his mental illness (because surely it wouldn't be anything less). Nothing like that came, though. I found no resolution of the sort. A little frustrating, yeah, but now I wonder if this wasn't part of Laurie's whole point. Scarred, confused, and disappointed in this man, her larger-than-life father whom she loved more than anything, she had to decide to move on, sans apologies, answers, or knowing anything for sure. She stopped waiting for a happy ending, I'd say, and started something new. And despite lacking the answers that I, myself, was waiting for, I think I can respect her for that.
What do You think about The Impostor's Daughter: A True Memoir (2009)?
Beautiful and raw. I was totally engrossed in this emotional story; it's a credit to graphic novels.
