The Last Airbender: Prequel - Zuko's Story (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
The Last Airbender Prequel Zuko’s Story by Dave Roman and Alison Wilgus will give you a better understanding about how Zuko struggled throughout his life. If you enjoyed the series of The Last Airbender, I’m positive that you will enjoy this little short story about Zuko’s life before the Avatar, Aang was rediscovered. In the beginning of the graphic novel, Zuko has been banished from the Fire Nation because of his father. Since Zuko spoke out of turn in a meeting with all the other fire nation generals and his father, his father, the Fire Lord teaches him a lesson by having an agni ki duel against his own son. In the aftermath, Zuko’s left eye was brutally burned and Zuko’s life as a prince was over. To regain his honor and throne as a prince, he must find the avatar whose location is unknown at the moment. His uncle has joined him to his quest to regain honor. Throughtout Zuko’s journey, he faces many obstacles and challenges. With his broken honor, he was unable to have power amongs the other fire nation citizens. As his journey progressed, he was losing hope in himself, until suddenly a beam of light came flashing up to the sky at the North Pole. His hope and determination has been restored. I think this was a great prequel for The Last Airbender and not just for its movie counterpart. It fits the cartoon version too. I liked how Zuko was fleshed out in this graphic novel. His banishment from the kingdom, his humiliation, and his endless wandering for the Avatar were all featured here. I couldn't help but be reminded why I thought Zuko was a fantastic character when I watched the cartoon version. His relationship with Iroh was great and you could clearly see they cared for each other. The weird thing though is that Iroh is thinner and has darker hair here. But it's a slight change that can be easily overlooked. Iroh's personality is still the same: patient, kind, and easygoing. My favorite part has to be the one where he met the old man living alone. His vision of Zuko's destiny of standing side-by-side with the Avatar made me giddy for some strange reason. It was a brilliant touch and a good foreshadowing for the events to come.5 stars!!!
