The Legend Of Zelda: Hyrule Historia (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a piece for the Zelda obsessives, for sure, but I could not help but feel that whilst it was interesting attempt at giving as a faux-historical retrospective on the series I really think that those in charge of this really don't understand what it is that the Zelda series has with its iconic and deliciously vague mythology or how to truly depict the concept art I actually wanted to see. It's kind of a "throw everything on a page as some kind of story game guide thing" and whilst that works for some, myself...it wasn't as satisfying as it ought to be as an art book or as a tribute to a series of video games I am really quite fond of both for nostalgic reasons and because it's always been quite compelling.I can't help but like it but it could have been far more. It feels like the Zelda games were made with little thought for story and even less thought for how each game relates to another and they're just now deciding to make them fit together. They say in the book that the priority has always been on gameplay which is disappointing for me. I suppose I read more than game, but games can have such awesome storylines and the Zelda series has always had so much potential. This book was cool and fun, but it did kind of point out the flaws in the series. Not just plot holes but also I've always felt that the games are too uniform. Each game has the same story line and play format: Princess gets kidnapped so warrior boy goes on quest to collect some lost jewelry that will somehow let him rescue her from evil wizard. Adding a little variety to that format without changing it is the ONLY thing the developers care about. Same goes with the Metroid games and is why I got tired of the games, I loved them but I really think a creative mind ought to be able to vary it more without betraying the fun gameplay. This was cool, but it also would've been cooler if they'd made the effort to make it feel more like an in world historical book like the cover impresses. Alas, one more way that good stories are shortchanged by greed.
