The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk: The Mayor Of Castro Street (1982) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a really good book. Randy did a great job of telling the story, and I think this ought to be required reading for all students in High School. Harvey was not assassinated merely because he was gay. He was not murdered for simple ideology. There is a lot going on here that lead to the double-murder, and we have forgotten about it.We pretend that the Gay Rights movement is something new. We like to believe that the arguments we are giving and hearing are new. They are not. Even when the arguments were being espoused in the 1970's, they were not new.Read this book, understand current events a little bit better. A fantastic biographic documenting the life of Harvey Milk. From his childhood in Woodmere, N.Y to the 1977 San Francisco supervisor elections. The book discusses the setbacks and achievements of the gay community in gaining national acceptance during the 70s. The backlash against Anita Bryant and the Briggs' Intiative. But, the book discusses primarily Harvey Milk's role as the mouthpiece for the gays of the 70s. As well as his eventual assassination. This book was a page turner, and very inspiring as well. Seeing as I myself am a LGBT Youth. It helped me understand what it was like for gay community in that time period, and the efforts made to improve our/my rights.
