The Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I read this book in a few days, which is a quick read for me. If I had really focused and had gotten down to business, I probably could have read it in one sitting. I read some of the reviews on Goodreads of this book BEFORE I read the book, and I was a little worried that based on all the 1, 2, 3's and occasional 4's that it would disappoint. Now, here I am, back on Goodreads AFTER I read the book. I quickly skimmed some of the comments and thought about what I was going to write. I was almost hoping that I would have a strong opinion about this book, as I usually do about most books. There were some negative themes and symbols that people wrote about (or that they thought made the book worse) and I didn't really find anything like this with the book. I am a dog lover, always have been, and always will. I was excited to read this book because, well, duh! She loves dogs and so do I. Right off the bat, Lara annoyed me a little. And throughout the book she continued to. She didn't really have her own voice and the one big thing was that her dogs weren't really trained. I did not like Evan, just for the sake that he did not like her dogs. As I write this, yes, if I had not read this book and if I was given the opportunity to pick it off a shelf and read it again, I WOULD!! It wasn't too realistic in my opinion, her relationship with her mom was a little strange and far fetched. I have always wanted to start a rescue like this, so maybe I just loved the idea that someone had done it and it could kind of be like a blueprint for me to base mine off of. Overall, I felt like this book was good but not great. The writing wasn't great, but the underlying story was. The author kind of pissed me off a little with her writing but it wasn't a huge turn off. I felt like she kind of picked pieces from other stories and the characters represented different movies or stories I have seen. If your a dog lover, read it for the fun and excitement of dogs. Its like an airplane "book" instead of a movie, quick read, easy, fun, fast, motivating! Like I said, not very realistic, but who cares! This was a nice, breezy read so I wasn't expecting too much depth. With that said, I have to admit how a few of character relationships and plot lines abstractedly reflected my own life. There were moments when it felt like the characters and their relationships with one another in the book oddly reflected people in my own life and the relationships I've had with them (mom, dad, ex, etc.). Aside from being a little creeped out by this, the overall story wasn't bad and the characters were interesting enough. My only real complaint was the last five or so chapters of the book felt really slapped together, especially when it doesn't end with her rescue becoming a booming non-profit or even a mention of her pack of dogs we had met her with at the beginning of the book.
