The Lucky Ones: My Passionate Fight For Farm Animals (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

In this book, the author shares the story of how she became involved in animal welfare issues and how she began her farm animal sanctuary. This she does somewhat satisfactorily; however, poor grammar and brief strong language, while infrequent, make her message less effective. Also, the bouncing back and forth between the present and her life leading up to it was a little jarring at times. While I too am appalled and devastated at the extremely cruel treatment suffered by farm animals, I felt the author didn’t spend quite enough time educating readers about what happens each day at a factory farm. Instead, she complains that people don’t eat vegan. She insists that people will be thinner and healthier if they do eat vegan, but fails to back up her claim with factual examples. Similarly, she ignores the issue of what people with cats and dogs are supposed to feed their strictly carnivorous pets, if not meat. I found this omission surprising as the author mentioned several times how important her cat was to her.My biggest issue with this book is the author’s unfounded blaming of Christians for animals’ suffering. She claims that the Bible’s teaching that we are to have “dominion” over the animals is the reason for their suffering (because according to her we then have permission to exploit them). She is gravely mistaken in her interpretation of the Bible. To the contrary, to “subdue” the earth means we are to understand it, and to have “dominion” over the animals means we are to care for them; the “dominion mandate” is simply God giving us stewardship over His creation. God cares about His animals, as evidenced by Job 38 - 39, Psalm 104 (which describe His providential care of the animals), Jesus’ mention that God takes notice of sparrows that fall, and God’s reluctance to destroy Ninevah because of the cattle, (as well as children). Because God cares about His animals, He expects us to be good stewards of them. Again, see Job, as well as Proverbs 12:10, which states “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”Finally, I would like to make it clear that I wholeheartedly agree with the author’s belief that the abuse of farm animals has to stop; I simply did not find her book beneficial because she whined and accused more than presented facts.Scripture taken from the King James Version of the Bible. There's a lot to cheer about in Jenny Brown's The Lucky Ones: the author's hard fought victory over cancer as a youngster, her education about the realities of farmed animals, and her determination to make the planet a better place by fighting for the animals, for starters. The Lucky Ones is written in an enjoyable, conversational style, is very straight forwardly honest, and inspiring. Recommended to anyone who considers themselves an animal lover!
