The Mayan Conspiracy (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

I’ve never been able to resist a jungle thriller steeped in Mayan lore, so I was anxious to get my hands on this novel. Danielle Laidlaw is a covert government operative on a mission to find ancient Mayan ruins in the heart of the Amazon jungle. Separated from her partner by the brass, Danielle leads a team of scientists and university students through the Amazon in search of an amazing power source that could change the balance of power in the world. To tip the scales in her favor, she hires Hawker, an American pilot with a shady history who’s living in South America in exile. Naturally, Danielle’s team isn’t the only group out scouring the jungle for ancient secrets, and they not only have to do battle against strange, mythical creatures guarding their treasures, but flesh-and-blood mercenaries who are after the same thing, and a tribe of natives who are out to stop anyone from foolishly unleashing an ancient horror through their greed. Though I won’t go so far as to say I was disappointed in the book, I also did not find it as thrilling as the hype would imply. This is a decent, solid jungle thriller with a smattering of ancient Mayan mythology thrown in for good measure, though. I won’t hurt anyone to get my hands on the next Brown novel, but I am likely to read it. This was an excellent adventure! A very good first time novel!I really enjoyed the main character Hawker. I am really hoping we see more of him. I liked the female main character Danielle but in the end I wanted to know more about Hawker and didn't really care as much about Danielle. The science theory was a little far fetched but if you take it for an adventure novel it's very fun!I will definitely look for more by this author.
