The Midnight Library (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Well, those who love books, reading, and libraries are going to find this book adorable. Others? Probably not. I love the simplicity of the illustrations, and the use of color to show it is night time. I like the familiar things of working in a library--finding a place for louder groups to be able to be loud, and telling patrons about books. And it has a turtle! Yep. Many reasons to reach my librarian heart. :-) A cute little book, but far too flat in terms of story. Nothing important really happens and the "problems" are all solved in the most obvious way possible without any conflict, contemplation, or doubt. Yes, it is a children's book, but it could still be more engaging. That said, I do like the setting of this book and think something interesting could be done with it. Particularly the fact that near the end of the book we see a sign in the library's window saying it is open from midnight to dawn, which includes the period commonly called "the witching hour" and so it strengthens the idea that the world the library is in is otherwise normal, with normal animals and the ones in the book only walk on two legs and read and talk because that is the type of thing animals do during strange and magical times when humans sleep.

What do You think about The Midnight Library (2014)?

Cute story. The colors are Halloween like, but the books isn't scary or about Halloween at all.

The kids really liked this one. A good October read because it is Halloween-ish
