The woman grabbed her daughter and smoothed her hair away from her face while Kayla sobbed. “Dad, she said mean things about Annie.” Jasmine’s eyes shone with unshed tears, a scratch down her right cheek. “I couldn’t let her get away with it.” “What did she say?” Ian asked, turning his attention from Kayla’s dramatics. Jasmine glanced at Annie then whispered something in Ian’s ear. His expression darkened. Annie didn’t want the child getting in trouble because of her. “Jasmine, don’t let Kayla—” “She called you a monster. You aren’t.” Tears slipped down her cheeks. Annie scanned the growing crowd and quashed the impulse to leave. She had to be here for Jasmine—and Ian. That was more important than how Kayla had insulted her. “I’m sorry she said that, but that doesn’t mean you need to go after her. Please tell her you’re sorry.”
