The One World School House, Education Reimagined (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
My children are using Khan Academy as part of their math curriculum, so I was interested to read this book to find out his philosophy and how this got started. Good book, some good ideas, although some of his thoughts on how to reinvent classrooms are a bit out there (multi age classrooms with up to 100 kids in each area being taught by 5 teachers. My first thought is chaos, and my second thought is some kids will be so overwhelmed and overstimulated by this that no learning could possibly happen.) However, the idea of self paced learning and mastery of concepts is spot on-especially for math. The idea that everyone should master a topic before moving on to harder concepts is so true, and why many kids struggle with math as concepts get harder in our current system, even kids who have been getting "A"'s. He also has some great ideas about educating the world, and making education accessible to everyone, and has some very influential backers and investors. Overall a good read, and I am curious to see how my kids do this year after implementing Khan academy in their math class. I love this book and the ideas presented about our current education system! The concept I enjoy the most is that we aren't programmed to sit and listen to lectures for six or more hours a day! I always found this difficult when receiving my formal education. The ideas that we need to create a love for learning and children from any state or country can have access to Physics, Calculus and language skills are ideas I whole-heartedly agree with! I hope educators in my state of Idaho take a look and consider the advantages mentioned in Salman Khan's book. Right now Idaho ranks very low in meeting the standards of education in our country. It gives me hope that my children can have an equal chance for a phenomenal education by implementing the videos and concepts shared in this book.
