The Pout-Pout Fish In The Big-Big Dark (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

The Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark is a book about the small lost pearl of Ms. Clam. During a yawn, a large current whooshed the pearl out of her mouth, and Mr. Fish promises to find her precious pearl. Off Mr. Fish swam through the busy ocean floor, but with no luck finding Ms. Clam's baby pearl. He swam a little deeper remembering that he was faster than a sailfish, smarter than a dolphin, stronger than a shark, but scared of the dark. The further and further he went, the darker and creepier it got, but he just kept swimming. Finally, Mr. Fish reaches his destination where he is supposed to venture down into the deep dark trench where baby pearl possibly drifted to. When his courage runs out and he's about to turn around, a small voice encourages him to keep on ahead. And together, Miss Shimmer and Mr. Fish find baby pearl and return him to his mom, just like they promised. The Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark is a book appropriate for children ages 2-7. The kids will be drawn to the book's wiggly sea creatures and the mystery of what is lurking in the dark. I would implement this book in my classroom by first reading then discussing the book. We would talk about what it means to have courage and what examples of courage would look like. We would relate these courageous acts to acts of kindness and friendship. I could also use it during science discovery and exploration as we look at the illustrations of different sea creatures. By comparing and contrasting the book's illustrations to real life photos of sea creatures, the children will be able to discuss, explore, and analyze the features of these sea animals. Mr. Fish goes on an adventure to help his friend Mrs. Clam find her pearl that got lost when she yawned. He promised to find her pearl no matter what. He searches all over, but cannot find it. Mr. Fish explains how he is faster than a snailfish, stronger than a shark, smarter than a dolphin, but he is SCARED OF THE DARK. The feeling of a pout-pout started to arrive. His journey to find the pearl leads him deeper and deeper into the ocean which unfortunately means he's going into the dark. He almost turns around and goes back when his friends help him to be brave and push through his fears. So, with the help of a key friends, they find the pearl and learn that friends always help friends and you always keep your promises to your friends. This book is intended for kindergarten through possibly second graders. The story deals with responsibility, manners, feelings, and friends. These concepts are covered in younger elementary grades. So, I believe this story would fit perfectly with these grades. The story is a good fit for my future classroom and students because it covers very basic concepts that are very important for young students to understand in order to behave properly in a school setting. But, the lessons learned in this book can also be applied outside of the classroom as well. The illustrations are amazing, fun, and can lead into discussions about all the different kinds of animals in the ocean.I would use this book in my classroom when teaching about respect, manners, feelings, and responsibilities to others. I believe that the Pout-Pout fish series can be very useful in a variety of different ways.
