The Puppy That Came For Christmas And Stayed Forever (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

3.5 starsI'm a sucker for dogs on covers and seriously who could resist this adorable puppy! The Puppy that Came For Christmas is a sweet, feel-good read even though the heartbreak of infertility is pivotal to Megan and Ian's story.I'm grateful that Clomid then IVF gave me two beautiful boys but I understand the anguish that infertility brings. When infertility forces Megan and Ian to consider all possibilities for having a baby they find joy being puppy parents for Helper Dogs, an organisation that trains dogs to give people with disabilities a better quality of life. But Helper Dog puppies move on from their puppy parents at 6 months and this sad parting becomes too much for Megan and Ian after saying goodbye to Emma, then Freddy. The answer was their own 'forever' puppy. A lovely holiday read especially if you're a dog lover. This book celebrates the unconditional love and pure joy a puppy brings to a family. “The Puppy that came for Christmas” by Megan Rix, published by Plume.Category – Dogs/MemoirMegan Rix is in her forties and knows her biological clock is ticking, and she desperately wants a baby. She has tried just about everything and she is still not pregnant. Her husband, Ian, and Megan decide to be foster parents for dogs that are being groomed for “Helper Dogs”, the equivalent to our “Service Dogs”. They keep the dogs for about 6 months and then are returned to the agency for further training. Megan becomes so attached to their first dog, Emma, that she finds it almost impossible to give the dog up. In fact, she and Ian try to buy Emma from the agency for far more than she is worth. The agency feels that their responsibility is to train these dogs and that it would against their policy to sell Emma.Ian and Megan are given another dog, Freddy, and again they go down the same road. They become so attached to Freddy that they once again are devastated when they must give Freddy up.In the meantime, Ian and Megan, explore the possibility of adoption or foster parenting children. After hearing from several people they decide that they would be better off not pursuing that option. They come to the realization that they should get a dog of their own, one that they would not have to give back after several months. They find their “forever dog” in Traffy” who more than fills their needs.I was really looking for a Christmas story but the only Christmas part of the story is getting “Traffy” around Christmas and the Christmas dinner attended by Megan’s family.A nice read, especially for those who love dogs. It is a quick and easy read that really shows the love and devotion that can be shown by dogs.
