Creepy fun. It reminded me of how I used to be afraid as a child to go down into my basement alone. Did I say "as a child"? This book made me think that I might have reasons to fear now. I'm just glad I don't live in England where "The Problem" has taken place. I loved the characters, Lucy, Lockwood, and George, three, young ghost hunters. They work well together when they're not bickering with each other. And it seems quite a bit of thought went into making this alternate world and the "rules" for fighting and subduing ghosts. I especially loved reading how the characters prepped their gear for a night out hunting ghosts- iron chains, rapiers, flares, salt bombs, snacks, and tea. Yes, they actually take time to make tea, don't they? 99% of kids will love to read this. Some of them will need to keep their night light on or at least spread iron shavings around their bed. Despite being a little long (almost 400 pages) for my tastes, I would read this book again. And I am looking forward to reading more from this author. For this reason, I give this book four out of five stars. Lockwood and Co.The Screaming StaircaseJonathen StroudThe Screaming Staircase is a young adult thriller novel by Jonathan Stroud. It is the first book in a series titled Lockwood & Co., and was released on 29 August 2013 by Random House in the United Kingdom. It has Fantastic characters, fast-paced action, and truly alarming in places. Mostly it's suspenseful, supernatural adventure. The characters are:-Lucy Carlyle-Anthony Lockwood-George Cubbins-Suzie Martin-Annie Ward-Inspector Barnes-Sir John William Fairfax-Hugo BlakeIt has a thrilling movie called Titled Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase. For more than fifty years, the country has been affected by a horrifying epidemic of ghosts. A number of Psychic Investigations Agencies have sprung up to destroy the dangerous apparitions.Lucy Carlyle, a talented young agent, arrives in London hoping for a notable career. Instead she finds herself joining the smallest, most ramshackle agency in the city, run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood. When one of their cases goes horribly wrong, Lockwood & Co. have one last chance of redemption. Unfortunately this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive.Set in a city stalked by specters, The Screaming Staircase is the first in a chilling new series full of suspense, humor and truly terrifying ghosts. Your nights will never be the same again . . .The main young-teen characters in The Screaming Staircase are very resourceful, very brave ghost hunters (only kids have "the Sight") and inhabit a world where ghosts are nearly everywhere, putting people in danger every night (a "ghost-touch" is painful and can be fatal). There are some super-creepy descriptions involving skeletal remains and a ghost making it appear that blood's dripping all over the room. As it gets darker, the presence and malevolence of ghosts get stronger and one of the characters has a sense of how and why particular ghosts died (always violently). The teen ghost hunters are threatened by the living as well, encountering rapiers, fists, and gunfire. All other content is pretty mild, with language no stronger than "hellish" and "screwy."Lockwood & Co. is essentially a modern-day version of the Ghost busters. The only difference is the ghosts have completely overtaken the world and are causing multiple problems for people throughout England and the 'Ghost busters' in this case are young teenagers.Let me just say that I loved Lockwood & Co. The entire book was interesting, captivating, and just all out amazing.Go buy The Screaming Staircase NOW!!
