The Secret Of The Caves (1929) - Plot & Excerpts

The classic boy detectives by Frank Dixon--I read ALL of them in my younger years, one I ran out of Nancy Drew books. The Hardy Boys are brother amateur detectives, aspiring to follow in their famous father's footsteps. Frank Hardy is the elder of the two and has dark hair. Joe Hardy is the younger brother, and has blond hair and blue eyes. The stories are an unaging series, in which Frank and Joe are always 18 and 17 years of age, respectively. In the original series the brothers were a younger 16 and 15 years of age, but their ages were increased during the revision process that began in 1959. The series utilizes a "floating timeline", in which events always take place in the present day.The two boys live in the fictional city of Bayport (on Barmet Bay) with their famous father, Fenton Hardy, a private detective formerly with the New York Police Department, their mother Laura Hardy (erroneously called Mildred in The Flying Express), and their Aunt Gertrude, a character often used for comic relief.

This is vintage Hardy Boys, not re-written for modern readers. Even so, it appealed to my boys. (See, no need to update!) Mr Hardy is called in to figure out what is behind so many accidents at a nearby government radar installation. The boys are going to help, when a new case shows up: a missing young college professor whose father was tangentially connected to Mr Hardy. Frank and Joe start investigating that case. Meanwhile, Chet has a new metal detector and wants to go explore nearby Honeycomb Caves for lost treasure. Will the sleuthing allow the boys any free time for fun with friends? Or will all the plots come together? Listen and find out! This BOCD version has music snippets and sound effects, which add to the suspense and enjoyment. [Although the voice he uses for Chet is annoying - it keeps cracking as though he were a younger teen.]

What do You think about The Secret Of The Caves (1929)?

The Secret of the caves was overall a good book. I thought the plot was weird because they are assigned to find this missing college professor. After that it was fast paced. They find a clue that leads them to a bunch of caves that is supposedly haunted. The hardy boys and their friends realize it is just a fake hermit who imposes himself as someone far older than he is. Eventually they find out he is part of this gang who is shipping in stolen goods into the cave. They round up the gang and find the missing professer. Although the book was fast paced I thought the ending was too abrupt and little explanation of solving the mystery. I would recommend this book who likes action and mystery.

An enjoyable book for young boys - most modern readers will find some of the dialogue a bit corny. Some interesting features: a memorable character (Commander Wilson the hermit), an interesting locale (the Palais Paris restaurant, and the caves at Rockaway). The Cadwill Quill character could have been quite cool, but the book barely used him.Main drawback of the book - the resolution takes place in about 4.5 pages, including wrapping up all the various loose ends. I'd like to read the original, longer version, as this version is the shorter, revised one, and perhaps that's the main reason it seems chopped off at the end.Worth a buck at a yard sale if you've know a younger boy who might want to read this.

Entry 1-The Hardys and Chet ar the protagonists and main characters. Commander Wilson, the people working at Palias Paris, and the foreign spy ring are antagonists.Entry 2-The theme is people are not as they may seem to be. The point is third-person. The setting is mainly at the Cobblewave Coves in Rockaway.Entry 3-When Morgan Todd goes on the case. It leads the to Rockaway and the Palias Paris. They uncover the plot of a anti-American country infilrating the U.S> from the inside using a submarine.
