The Secret Thoughts Of An Unlikely Convert: An English Professor's Journey Into Christian Faith (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I rarely rate a book 5 stars so this is exceptional, a must read. It is not surprising that it is so beautifully written, as Rosaria has a PhD in English. The story would be compelling even if poorly written, but it is not. For doubters, skeptics, agnostics and atheists, this book may provoke reflection and, perhaps, for some, even a second look at the Christian faith. Christians will find here an example of how to reach out to those outside of the faith. This is a case study in how to graciously present the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are truly His enemies. What a book! While it had a few "Why did she include that?" moments, it is mostly an amazing story of truly the most unlikely convert. Butterfield was very honest about her thought process in the journey towards faith and the chaos Jesus brought to her life. She offers the church a much needed reminder that coming to Christ doesn't just "make things better" when a deeply loved worldview is being dismantled and shattered to bits. Butterfield is a great example of what losing everything might look like in our culture.
