The Sibylline Oracle (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I can't believe I'm in the minority here but I struggled to finish this book. The premise of the book was so appealing and I thought it was going to be so good but it wasn't. I didn't connect at all with the characters and found it hard to believe that Valeria would just leave and go to Italy with Alex after knowing him for a few hours. The other characters were just weird. It was so annoying how long it took to tell her who they were. They just kept giving her little details and then telling her to go rest. It was just so bizarre !I finished it only because of all the good reviews and kept thinking that there was going to be some kind of amazing ending that would cancel out the entire painful beginning. The storyline seemed a bit confusing at first going from a historical time period to modern day New York with no explanation of what the historical reference was about in relation to Greek mythology, but it seemed to smooth out and flow nicely through the remainder of the book. I kept thinking, why is this girl (Valeria) going off with a complete stranger (Alex) within minutes of meeting him? Looking back I guess she couldn't help herself because she was Alex's reincarnated soulmate. I was very thankful when Valeria finally figured out who she was and the confusion of her situation became more focused. I enjoyed the characters; Valeria who seems fragile turns out to be so courageous. And who could not fall in love with patient Alex! I will remark that I am disappointed that the author chose to throw in a bit of profanity at the end of the book. It seemed out of character and certainly out of place in a storyline that had been clean and enjoyable to that point. I hope Ms. Colvin did not include this just to get a more adult rating - the integrity of her work is capable of standing on its own.
