The Sleeper And The Spindle (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Reworked fairy tales have become such an overdone genre I almost dread picking them up, particularly those which have zombies thrown in. This novel has two advantages Chris Riddell and Neil Gaiman.Just as The Graveyard Book could have been a dull rehash of the jungle book in lesser hands, this could have just fallen into the mire. Instead the deft prose and beautiful illustrations mark this out as a brilliant little story.As this is obviously short I will not go deeply into the plot but the only critique I would have is there is very little of it and therefore marks it out as not quite reaching the heights of Gaiman's other works. The best Christmas Calendar gift ever. Started it when I got it yesterday morning. The most fascinating tale ever. I got early on that the Queen and heroine in this tale is Snow White, but she will always be the Queen. She sets out on a quest to wake the sleeper and stop the sleep. The sleeper in this tale is not the Princess that I thought it would be, but the witch itself. That was a nice twist and how it played out after she woke was a nice twist also.Very well written the whole way through a heroic tale. Loved it and I do recommend it,
