The Soundtrack Of My Life (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood are some of the many musicians that Clive Davis has either discovered or helped further develop as artists.Clive’s biography follows the usual format, starting with his childhood then going through the years up into the present day. In some cases, Davis deviates from that style to devote whole chapters to certain musicians such as Whitney Houston. One of my favorites was the one dedicated to Santana’s Supernatural record. Clive shared how the project came to be and how so many of the people who collaborated on it were thrilled to work with Carlos. The book is a narration of the ups and downs of the industry, the man and the many people Clive has worked with. The biography is bulky, filled with details about the business and creative processes behind the hits. I found the book interesting, well written and it left me with a better understanding of musical artistry and business. A wonderful book that read like a story rather than a telling of facts. It is absolutely mind blowing how much Clive Davis has been such an instrumental part in mainstream music for so many years. Pretty much name an artist and he's most likely had some sort of impact on their career. I loved learning about the last 50 years of music that he's been a part of. The world would be much different if it wasn't for him!
