The Source Of All Things: A Memoir (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a combination of both beautiful and heartbreaking. Tracy Ross did a really wonderful job of describing these places that have meant so much to her, but the pain that woman endured at the hand of someone she loved was not an easy thing to read. This memoir has made me want to go to Idaho and hike around the Sawtooth Mountains -- and experience that beauty for myself. It's also made think about any children I may have later on in my life. I'm posing questions to myself such as 'What can I do to protect my (non-existent) children from this pain?' I admire Tracy's courage. Well, I looked forward to bedtime each day I was reading this because bedtime is when I do most of my reading, so I must have liked it pretty well. Why? The underlying theme is distressing and, sadly, all too common, but the author treats her unfortunate childhood in a surprisingly hopeful way. Her prose is straightforward yet not without flashes of beautifully descriptive passages, reflecting her love of the outdoors and her experience as a journalist.
