The Stick Man Jigsaw Book (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

A cute book with rhyming lines. I added this book on recommendations from others for their Christmas reading. The only part that makes it close to a Christmas book, is that fact that at the end Santa is in the story helping Stick Man. It was a bit young for my boys (9 and 14), which I did think would happen, but it was fun none-the-less to read. Not sure if I'll keep it part of our Advent reading for next year or not yet, but I will keep it in my book collection for sure. Julia Donaldson takes us through the epic journey of Stick Man who is taken away from his Stick Lady Love and Stick children Three. We follow Stick Man through the realities and dangers of being a ‘stick’ as he longs to get back home to his family tree. He is used by a dog to play fetch, used as an arm for a snowman and even ends up in a fireplace. Surprisingly he is saved by Santa and is reunited back with his family in time for Christmas. Overall an excellent and somewhat emotional adventure story. The rhymes and repetition are great characteristics that feature in the book which during a whole class read would engage children to join in. It also has potential curriculum support for Literacy at Key Stage 1, for example children could re-write the story as a diary entry from Stick Man’s point of view. Possible cross curricular links could include Art whereby children collect natural materials (e.g. sticks / leaves) to make their own stick people and animals. A timeline of the key events in the story could be shown record the chronological events in the story as part of history.
