The Time Of The Fireflies (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
12 Year old Larissa Renaud answers a disconnected phone in her family’s antique store and a mysterious voice instructs her to “trust the fireflies.” The fireflies lead her across the bayou and into the past where over several trips Larissa solves the mystery of her family’s misfortunes and breaks a century old curse. The evocative bayou setting is an important character in this 2nd novel about Larissa. Magic, mystery and history shook hook middle readers. Recommended for ages 9-12. This was a sweet and tender read, poignant with love of family and rich with the mystery of the past. Larissa is a charming character, resilient and brave. Which is good, because she's going to need all her gumption once she begins receiving those mysterious whispery phone calls, and hanging out with some fireflies with an agenda. A great story, with lovely themes of redemption, looking beneath the surface, and self-acceptance. The writing is poetic and lovely too. A great read, especially good for smart young readers.

A decent, easy-to-read Southern "ghost" story, though predictable and at times a bit contrived.
