This is a quiet little book that shines and shines. Robby is staying with his grandmother over the summer. She's a little eccentric but stable. Robby's parents are world-famous musicians and touring abroad, leaving Robby adrift, emotionally. The real star of this book is Robby's dog, Ellie. She's a remarkable animal among many remarkable animals. Truly excellent story, told simply and beautifully. Wow this author is amazing. Such a sensitive approach to hard inner turmoil of children. So many kids will be able to relate to this somewhat neglected main character. I could see it opening a child's eyes to the fact that parents have stories and histories and problems that can interfere in their parenting. Might help deal with the hurt! The writing is elegant and simple, the storyline interesting, exciting in parts, but always amazing characterizations. I would highly recommend it for upper elementary students! Perhaps a read aloud as well--I can imagine amazing class discussions.
A boy and his unusual grandma spend a summer together. Good story especially for those 8-12
