The Unfairest Of Them All (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Very cute. The plot is a bit basic, but that's what you get with such a short book. Characters were more developed, and we get to see more story deviations that make the backgrounds so interesting (I had guessed about Cerise, and I liked that about the Candy Witch!). I bet the Evil Queen gets free in the next book or so. They have to find some way to restore Wonderland. I gasped when I learned the freed creature was the Jabberwocky!Apple tries too hard, but I felt quite a bit of sympathy after listening to her failed attempts at leading and controlling a crowd. The poor advice she got was laughable. I didn't like her voice.Raven is neat, but she came across as rather indecisive in this book. She is constantly second guessing her actions. Okay, you've thought about consequences, move on. She's rather selfless. Except when it comes to stealing eggs, grr. I felt sorry for the mom cottage chicken.Heh, I hadn't expected who actually broke the glass unicairn. Okay, she's won me over. They're not the most amazing books I've ever read, but they're fun. I love Maddie. I love how everything has been incrementally deepening over time. Her other books are pretty intense the whole time, but these seem really superficial and then get more meaningful as the story progresses, which is actually pretty amazing. I think that they would be amazing gateways for young readers moving into more literary content. That's actually exactly what Hale does best; these books just work in that same way but for a younger audience, so starting at a lower literary maturity level. Definitely well done. I look forward to reading the others, and I'm pretty sure that whenever she gets to the end of the story, we'll all be totally blown away. All the marketing hype kind of drives me crazy, but, hey, kids will latch onto merchandising no matter what, so at least this is more wholesome than Monster High or Bratz. And I definitely feel like the merchandising is a supplement to the novels, not the other way around. And Hale deserves to have a little fun, so I guess it's fine. Bring on the backpacks, planners, and dolls!
