The Unwritten, Vol.4 - Leviathan (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Fantastic. This and the volume that follows it are the strongest part of this series, using the intertextual metafictional aspects of comics and putting them to great use in an adventure story that is aware of the narratives tropes of stories, but finds ways to both frustrate them and fulfill them to the delight of the reader. If you like comics and you like fiction, you'll love this series. I am won over. Kind of disappointed with this one. This volume is kind of broken into chapters some of which are only a page or two, most are only three or four. While these chapters made the book a fast read, it also made the story feel somewhat disjointed. Also, I feel like the story is being revealed too slowly, I need more action. I’m waiting for our main character, Tom, to do something. I feel like he is just reacting, being pushed and pulled by outside forces, I get the reluctant hero aspect, but this is book 4!The art was great and the literary references make it fun, but overall kind of a bore.
