The Walking Dead, Vol. 10: What We Become (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Arriving back at their former home, Rick and Carl are settling back in with friends, though most of them have been left broken by the loss of loved ones when the prison fell. Maggie seems to almost be shattered beyond repair even as she and Glenn have basically adopted Sophia, Carol's daughter. Rick is still haunted by the voice of his wife Lori. The series takes a major shift of direction with the arrival of another small group of four people. They include of government scientist, who has a theory about where the walkers came from and hints at the possibility of government involvement. He is being protected by a former military man and his girlfriends as they are making their way from Houston, Texas to Washington DC. They insist that Washington is still a safe refuge, and our surviving heroes find hope in that. They join up in this new trek, particularly as one of the newcomers highlights the dangers of herds of walkers that can overwhelm any space, which is a true danger to those who settle down in a place permanently. As with many of the previous volume, readers of this 10 addition to the series will find that this small group of changing allies is still going to be troubled not only by the dangers of the walkers, but also the difficult personalities and their interactions. Under the dangers of the situation, they are proving to not only be safety in numbers but another danger to each other. What is interesting is that the group is making its way back through where Rick and Carl are from, near Atlanta. That means they also get to return to an old familiar face whose time apart from Rick had proven to be totally heartbreaking (and mind-shattering!). I definitely can't wait to read the next book. I am hoping that this new track with the scientist might start to provide us with insight as to where this plague did start. We did get that very little bit of information when Rick and his friends made their way to the CDC in Atlanta, but we haven't had anything like that since. Oh well! I am sure I will still be thrilled! Still traveling to DC and Rick decides to take a side trip back to his town and police station to check on Morgan and Duane and stock up on guns and supplies. Abraham comes clean about his family after Rick goes berserk on some road bandits and they share some gruesome stories and Rick shares his realization of the new life and why they're still alive. Dale wants to settle down but when Rick and the side crew come back leading and showing what the scientist means by a herd Dale starts to get irritated with Rick.
