The Widow's Walk: A Novel (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I was attracted to this novel by the intriguing blurb on the back cover. A woman trapped between this life and next, not a ghost, but still otherworldly. It sounded right up my alley. What's not to like about this book? Almost everything. This novel reads like a self-published novel with -ly adverbs scattered on every page. I'm shocked that the large publishing house, Harper Collins, would pick it up. The male author paints a sexist picture of the heroine and women of the 19th century, who in fact were hardworking pioneers, my ancestors included. We are supposed to believe that the young, unmarried heroine was a midwife when, in fact, unmarried women were not allowed near the birthing room. Midwives were married women who had given birth. The duel, halfway into the novel, is so revolting that I wished I'd had a gun to kill the husband's opponent. Women trembling and fainting and insisting how much better they were treated by men a hundred and seventy years ago, made reading very difficult. The explanation of why the heroine is stuck between the worlds is unbelievable. I paid $18.50 for this mess and I will not be reading any more of Robert Barclay's novels. An atmospheric, romantic tale, "The Widow's Walk", from author Robert Barclay, will find a home with lovers of the time-travel genre. In present day New Bedford, Massachusetts, Garrett Richmond purchases the home of his dreams with plans to restore the house to its former glory. Though his friends and family doubt his sanity for buying the neglected manse known as "Seaside", Garrett has been drawn to the place for as long as he can remember. An architect himself, he knew exactly what to do to bring the old home back to life. However, he was unprepared for the lovely woman caught in time who had been trapped in Seaside for more than 170 years. Constance Canfield has once shared the home with her husband Adam, a whaling ship captain, who had been lost at sea. At the same time Adam died, Constance had been the victim of a tragic accident at Seaside, disappearing from the real world and remaining between one world and the next. Garrett is the first person ever to see and hear Constance since her accident. As their connection deepens, and the past begins to merge more and more with the present, the two of them must find a way to stay together. But how can that be? Will Constance remain in the modern world, or will Garrett find his own place in the past? Review Copy Gratis Amazon Vine
