The Wilder Life: My Adventures In The Lost World Of Little House On The Prairie (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

As a longtime fan of all things Laura, I really enjoyed this book. The author and I shared some of the same obsessions and we saw other elements very differently, but the book was written with affection and humor. I am always interested in the things that people obsess over and it is especially interesting when I happen to share the obsession. I found that I could identify with some of McClure's disappointment as she delves deeper into the world of her childhood idol. That said, I thought that she approached the subject matter with much respect. Her style is very conversational and I found myself laughing out loud, especially at some of her boyfriend's thoughts on the whole thing. Overall, a very enjoyable look at fandom in general and the love and devotion that Laura Ingalls Wilder's work inspires. I totally related to the author's need to do Prairie-Type Things like churning butter, and was sort of fascinated by how she connected the homesteading movement to fandom of the book. It was interesting to see someone my age take on visiting all the Laura Ingalls Wilder sites across the country. But, I found a lot of the book to be snobby and irritating. She hasn't met a Christian fan of the book that she doesn't enjoy disparaging (especially homeschoolers), and she whines a good bit about this and that in the LW sites. Things aren't interesting enough, things are too interesting. Whatever. Typical wawawa navel-gazing I've come to expect from memoir writers of my generation.
