—HOMER SIMPSON New Year Resolution My oldest friend is a psychopath. We go all the way back to nursery school. I remember one of the teachers taking me over to the sandbox and introducing me to this blond, roly-poly kid who was playing with one of those puzzles where you have to insert the right shape into the right hole. Anyway, I picked up a star, and tried to shove it through the hole that, with the benefit of hindsight, I can now clearly see was most definitely intended for the parrot. It wouldn’t fit. Worse, it got stuck. Johnny spent twenty seconds or so (an eternity in the life of a five-year-old) calmly working it free. And then he poked me in the eye with the damn thing. That callous, unprovoked, and, frankly, downright juvenile attack pretty much marked the high point of our friendship. Fast-forward ten years or so and Johnny and I are in high school together. It’s recess, and he comes over to me and asks if he can borrow my history paper. He’s “left his at home.”
