The Wishing Year: An Experiment In Desire (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Willingness to keep an open mind is essential. Interesting development of the author's process of thinking of not wishing for too much, being "deserving" of wishes by first suffering, and then becoming more positive (if you will) wisher by most of all "putting it out there." Easy to read, appreciated the references within the text. Peaked my interest enough that I'll be looking into some of the material she used to research the topic of wishing. I came across this book in my Mondo Beyondo 'Dreaming' class, Noelle Oxenhandler had an interview about this book in the class. I would probably rate this book at 4.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half stars. Noelle has a beautiful writing style and she has done a lot of research on dreaming and tells a lot of stories in this book of other peoples (including her own) wishes coming true. She does do a little quoting of some books she has read, but the quote she took from Paul Pearsall's Wishing Well really stuck to me. Here it is, "The best wishers are worriers. One of the signals you can use to tell you when a wish is called for is worrying. If you don't worry you can't wish well, because worrying is an essential precursor of a well-made wish.... Our ability to think about consequences, reflect on them, try to sense them, and even ruminate a little about what "might be" is one of our most important adaptive skills. It's a means of rehearsing "what ifs" and "what will I do if" and running over and over again in our minds the worst-case scenarios without having to actually experience them. The key is to know you're worrying and when to stop worrying and do something or wish for something. Worry can be a tip-off that a wish in the domain of your worrying may be in order"I love this, especially since I used to be (and still can be) a worry wart.Great book, read this if you are looking for something that will really make you THINK. Its really a book about her trying to fulfill her dream of a house, a man, and spiritual healing... but, it was SO much more to me. Also, there the mind over matter part in the book was interesting, too.
