The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders To Justice (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Becky Musser's story is quite extraordinary as it sheds light on the inner workings of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints. I expected the book to focus on the criminal actions and trials of the FLDS polygamist leadership; this occurs but in the latter half of the book. Becky shares her tumultuous spiritual and emotional journey from believer, to doubter, then back to a place of forgiveness for others and herself. I only gave it three stars as I found her writing disjointed at times, with superfluous side comments and a sometimes indiscernible timeline. Regardless, her story is compelling and worth the read. I love that Becky was intelligent enough to question everything and not just blindly believe everything about the FLDS and the people around her. I think it takes a courageous person to leave everything and everyone you know and I'm so happy she was able to escape, start a new life and bring Warren Jeffs down. The story is so disturbing. As for the writing, the first half of the book was great, but the last half dragged on with a lot of repetition and some corny writing. Way too much "soul-shaking, soul-shifting, soul-shattering and rocking me to my core" for me. Ick. Overall, an interesting read. Yet another example of how religion is creepy and poisonous.
What do You think about The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders To Justice (2013)?
Very well written and interesting look at the inner workings of Warren Jeffs' FLDS "cult".
