The Year We Fell Down (The Ivy Years) (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
A real "kinda kinda" book. Originally refers to "kinda subversive, kinda hegemonic", but here it's kinda fantastic in disability terms (disabled protagonist in YA romance), kinda woeful (repeated use of derogatory words for disabled people & dismissal of parathletes ). And the romance is terrible! Also, the most embarrassing (almost) sex scene I've just about ever read. (Plus, no getting off on a technicality - that was cheating.) Great characterization is not something you find often in this genre. I am sorry, but that's the truth. But that's not the case in this book. The characters are awesome. I've read some wouldn't like the REALISTIC knee jerk reaction of the hero, but I embrace that flaw in his character. His reason isnt incredelous either. It made sense. The heroine is AWESOME. and yes, it is again a rare occurence in this genre. You meet alot of great book boyfriends, but not everyday you find a heroine you actually want to have coffee with and look up to.
