The Year We Hid Away (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

The Year We Hid Away was my first Sarina Bowen book and I thought it was amazing. The two MCs, Scarlet and Bridger, are forced into horrible circumstances by the actions of their parents. Yet they face them with strength and perseverance. I like how they're moving forward on painful paths and still manage to find each other and grab the happiness they can. The supporting characters are great too--and show how wonderful true friendship can be. (Ask for help; let people will surprise you). There were a couple of strange plot twists near the end. I didn't really see them coming--which is good--but I'm undecided if they added anything to the plot. Still-I would highly recommend this NA. Great characters, lovely writing, and a sweet story. You know how you start what appears is going to be a good book, only to be let down when the two main characters have a misunderstanding over something that could have been easily solved with a 30 second conversation? Thankfully, this is NOT one of those books. It could have easily gone that way, given the things Bridger and Scarlet were forced to hide from each other, but it didn't and that just made me enjoy it all the more.Bridger and Scarlet both have pretty depressing family situations hanging over them, but even with the darkness of the issues they are facing, I didn't find the book depressing. Both of them see each other as a bright spot in their lives and are determined to take whatever happiness they can get.I liked the supporting characters, especially Lucy, Brian and Andy (who I loved in Blonde Date). My only complaint about the story was Azzan, he was a little too much of a cartoon villain for me.
