The Young Wan (2004) - Plot & Excerpts

I've lent these books by Brendan O'Carroll to everyone I can think of. They're beautiful books, and have such a sincere, sweet tone. From wiki: Brendan O'Carroll is a comedian, writer, actor and director from Finglas, Dublin, Ireland.O'Carroll has written six novels, including The Mammy, The Chisslers, The Granny and The Young Wan; a number of these have become best sellers and have been published in other languages.[citation needed:]He has also written four films and seven stage plays.[citation needed:] These include The Course (1995), Grandad's Sure Lilly's Still Alive(1997), The Last Wedding (1999), Mourning Mrs Brown (2000), Mrs Brown Rides Again (2004) and For the Love of Mrs. Brown (2007).For a long time had a pony tail, until it was removed by Leeds Utd and Ireland footballer Gary Kelly in 1994 at the USA world cup. The ponytail was subsequently auctioned for charity and was sold for $15,000.[citation needed:]Much of his comedy is about his childhood in Finglas and Dublin City and his infatuation with carrots. He is currently[when?:] touring with his trilogy of stage plays, Mrs Brown's Last Wedding, Mourning Mrs Brown, and Mrs Brown Rides again, which follow the story of a Dublin "mammy" and her grown-up children.[citation needed:]Anjelica Huston starred as Mrs. Brown in the film version, 'Agnes Brown', based on O'Carroll's novel 'The Mammy'. It was filmed entirely on location in Dublin, Ireland, co-starring O'Carroll himself. O'Carroll also penned the screenplay.[citation needed:]O'Carroll had many jobs before entering the entertainment world at 35 years of age in 1990. All of his six books, seven plays, four films and six stand-up DVD's were written between 1990 and 2006.[citation needed:]He is a member of Mensa with an IQ in the top 2% worldwide.[1:]

This book is the prequel to The Mammy, The Chisellers and The Granny which I read eons ago. It is about Agnes Browne before she got married - Agnes Reddin.Agnes' mother was the daughter of the foundry owner. She was kind to the employees and learned all their names and the like. She worked in accounts and helped hand out their pay.Agnes' dad worked in the foundry and was a union leader. How they get together is one of the great stories in the book so I won't spoil it for you. They have 2 little girls, the eldest is Agnes. This is the story of her growing up and getting married in the Jarro (a very poor parish) in Dublin.I actually read it when it came out but had forgotten I had so I read it again. I would recommend reading The Mammy before reading this one. I liked this book because it shows such a different place and time. Agnes and her family are well drawn characters.

What do You think about The Young Wan (2004)?

This book is the prequel to the Agnes Browne trilogy, which I guess means it isn't a trilogy, but a series of four. Or maybe the author means it to be separate from the others in some way, I really don't know. Anyway, I liked it. It was nice to see how Agnes Browne became who she is. Or was. Or whatever. The story starts with her parents meeting and goes up until Agnes gets married to Redser, who you never really get to know much about. He plays a small, but important, part of this book, and of course is dead in the beginning of the first one. This book also deals with Agnes' sister Dolly immigrating to Canada, which was the only part of the story I saw coming a mile away. The one thing that always bothers me about a prequel, is should it be read before or after the original story? In this case I would say after. I'm not entirely sure that a few of the details between the books jived. Since they were the story in this book, and quickly mentioned in the others, it would have been more noticeable if I had read them the other way around. Would I recommend this book? Emphatically yes.
