This Is Herman Cain!: My Journey To The White House (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
A funny thing happened to conservative GOP candidate Herman Cain on his 2011 journey to America’s Oval Office. The mainstream media basically tarred and feathered the loveable business executive and ran him out of town. You won’t find any of that dirt in this book. Whether Cain knew at the time he wrote it that he would eventually have to explain his own alleged Monica Lewinsky moments is not clear. Perhaps that would be good material for his next book. This one reads like an expanded political campaign brochure. Perhaps it was meant to be such. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, it’s not that that’s a bad thing. In these 222 pages, you’ll learn about Cain’s roots, his early years, his education, his remarkable business career. Along the way, Cain lays out some sound business principles as well as some very practical ideas on how to become, (what Cain calls), your own “C-E-O of Self.” Perhaps the most compelling chapter, chapter seven, details how stage four cancer almost derailed the “Cain train” several years before he became a political figure. Anyone who survives both colon and liver cancer deserves our attention and respect. What should really capture your attention is Cain’s confidence. At the time of this writing, Cain was so confident that he was going to be our nation’s 45th President that he includes the major platforms in his own “Cain Doctrine.” Beyond that, Cain even details what “The Cain Administration” will be doing in Washington, D.C. during his first ninety days in office. If you want to go even deeper, in several appendices, Cain outlines what he would do with Afghanistan and China. Beyond foreign affairs, Cain digs into how “President Herman Cain” feels about domestic affairs, such as the economy, education, energy, entitlements, governmental regulation, government spending, health care, labor unions, national security, social security, tax cuts, etc. For political conservatives, the real heartbreak here is not the fact that the “Cain train” never made it to the D.C. station. The tragedy is; America will now probably never know if his policies would’ve worked. This is my review of the book, not the candidate. I try to read all the Presidential candidates' books, so I picked up This Is Herman Cain! The book serves its purpose of giving the reader some insight into Cain. Like the Cain candidacy itself, the book is short on detail and is clearly not meant to be a comprehensive biography. The book also works OK as a business management tome. I like his concept of CEO of Self. He is definitely a big-picture guy, not a micro manager.I am a Republican primary voter. Herman Cain is not my first or second choice, but he's not my last or next-to-last choice either. After reading his book, I do think more favorably of him than I did previously, and somewhat more comfortable with the idea of him being president. As I write this in late November, it looks unlikely that he will receive the nomination. Even so, like Sarah Palin at this juncture, he could very well remain on the GOP scene and be influential for some time to come. So, if you follow politics, it's good to know who Herman Cain is. Who knows what the future will bring?(Update 12/4/2011: My review was written after the allegations of sexual harassment but before the allegation of a long-term affair. And then yesterday, he dropped out of the race. I am leaving my 3-star rating unchanged, but clearly there is less reason to read the Cain book now.)
