'til The World Ends/Dawn Of Eden/Thistle & Thorne/Sun Storm (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Okey Doke - I have to start by saying that I can suspend huge amounts of disbelief and can buy into almost any world you want to take me too - if you sell it well. Unfortunately two of the three stories just didn't work for me. let's start with Ms. Kagawa's story. Part of the problem in being in such a meta world these days is that almost everyone knows the rules to specific tales. Rule #1 do not go down into the freakin' basement that just also happens to be a morgue. Certainly do not go down into the basement just to see if the man that you know was dead, wasn't really and decided to wander around down there. No good will come of it and you will have entered into too stupid to live territory. Rule #2 Stranger guy allows you to stay in a house and then suggests that you and your companion would like to catch a few zzzs in the basement. You think what the hey, I get a creepy vibe but let's go downstairs with only one exit while creepy guy is upstairs and then decide to have sex - no just no. Rule #3 If stupid stubborn father wants to go into town to get supplies even after being told dead people will eat him - then let him. Do not attempt to rescue him. Certainly MS heroine - don't follow after Mr. Hero so he will have to worry about you too. Even my granny knows what to do in case of vampires and zombies and I suspect zompires, so why didn't these folks? Sadly, I disliked this story so much I doubt I'll be reading anything else by this author soon. I won't say much about the third story - except to mention that I can only read that the hero has a "snarly smile" so many times before I too feel like snarling. The ending was extremely rushed - I've never seen a post - apocalyptic novel resolved in so few pages and with a big chunk o' ice to boot. Better world building would have helped as well, along with consistent characterization. However, I loved Ann Aguirre's story. _ excellent world building, engaging characters Aguirre does strong female protaganists well), very little romance but with definite hints of things to come (please let there be more about these characters and soon!) Highly enjoyable Mostly got this to get an idea what the Blood of Eden series would be like. I enjoyed 'Til The World Ends and the back-story of what happened to the world in the Immortal Rules. Can't wait to pick up the first novel! The other two books were little snippets of post-apocalyptic worlds and were interesting as well. Thistle and Thorn seemed to also be a prequel of some sort, but I'm not really sure.

Dystopian-depressing x3. Though I could have done without the romance..
