Tormenta (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

When I was first told about this book my first thoughts were: magical creature, Japanese steampunk, clockwork samurai, strong female character? Why have I not heard of this before?? Since the genre was a bit unique I did have some expectations that it would be brilliant, and it was really quite awesome.I would like to advise future readers to notice the appendix in the back of the book to help understand the Japanese that can be found within if it isn't a language you already know. It would have changed how I read and imagined the book had I found it earlier, I struggled especially at the beginning with picturing words I couldn't translate. The concept was challenging to understand at first and little details kept on popping up, for instance how Buruu couldn't understand what other humans were saying other than his mind speak with Yukiko. However, as soon as much was explained (about 1/3 of the way through for me) the story became gripping and I had no trouble reading! I've discovered a recent interest with steampunk but don't know a lot about it as of now, this story is a great stepping stone for anyone interested in getting into the genre. Did I mention the clockwork samurai?? Yukiko was a girl that anyone who lost a parent could identify with. A strong girl who will follow what she believes to the end and becomes the final stormdancer because of it. Her relationship with Buruu was intense and it was amazing how the bond of trust that existed between the two could stand the test of anything from clockwork samurai to oni (demons) to the emperor himself.I don't want to say too much and ruin the story, I'm trying to do no spoilers here and it's proving slightly difficult, but I would highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in steampunk or a desire for a bit of fantastical adventure!
