Totul Are O Explicatie (vol.1) (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
If you think that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING in this world can be explained in a 400-page book, then you are absolutely wrong! And you will end up detesting this book. In "This Explains Everything: Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works", John Brockman has asked influential minds all around the world one question: "What is your favourite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation?" The book is a compilation of answers (into essay form) to the above questions from biologists, chemists, astrophysicists, psychologists, economists, philosophers, writers, etcetera. Although many of the answers given as the deepest, most beautiful and elegant are 'natural selection', 'string theory' (Quantum mechanics) and 'theory of gravity', there are a wide range of other answers such as 'simplicity', 'electricity' and 'magnetism', 'time', and my favorite 'the Pigeonhole Principle'. There are answers as long as four pages and as short as a three words. The only critique I have for some authors is giving brief answers for interesting theories and explanation. For example, I would have liked much more information on how Emanuel Derman thinks that death is the final repayment. Still, each answer is unique as it allows you to peek into the thoughts of these influential minds. It also raises two important questions for the reader: What do they think is the deepest, most beautiful and elegant theory of how the world works?. And does the reader know enough about this world to answer the question in the first place? My answer as a reader: 1) Not sure as 2) I do not know enough to make a judgement.
