Treason At Lisson Grove (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I love historical fiction, especially when there is real history behind it. This story is not based on a particular event, as far as I know, but the knowledge I gained reading 1848 helped me to understand the wild revolutionary ideas that were loose all over Europe in the period after those revolutions fizzled and the Great War began. As usual, Charlotte Pitt is a strong woman who approaches problems with intelligence and presence of mind. The story also shows a lot more of Victor Narraway and one of my favorites: Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould. I have to say that I don't really like where this series has been leading over the past couple of books. While the individual books were good, it is the direction I don't like.Thomas seems permanently out of the Metropolitan Police and in Special Branch to stay. This offers several negatives from what I can see. First, he can no longer share the details of his cases with Charlotte which effectively cuts her out of helping. This extends to her extended family as well so they don't appear anywhere near as often. Second, it is all espionage (although murders do occur) and I feel that this limits the plot opportunities. Gracie and Tellman have married, which was obviously where they were going, but this seems to have removed them from the scene as well, which I don't like as it removes two really strong characters.I found the plot lines in this book somewhat lacking and there seemed to be more meandering than normal. Hopefully, this series gets back on track so that these well developed characters can become part of the narrative again.

I thought this was one of her best Thomas and Charlotte Pitt stories in a long time.
