Tzili: The Story Of A Life (1996) - Plot & Excerpts

The setting is eastern Europe during the Holocaust. This small book sets a powerful mood- it puts you in another world where all that is familiar has come undone and the only real thing at stake is to try to keep body and soul together amidst constant uncertainty. Tzili is a skinny mite of a girl of early adolescent years, simple and quiet to the point of almost being mute, largely ignored and neglected by her busy family. She is left behind to “look after the house” when war breaks out and everyone flees for their lives. The family figures that no one will bother a “feeble-minded little girl”. This is the story of her strange wanderings and her survival during this dark period of history. You can trust that this book knows what it’s talking about. Israeli author Aharon Appelfeld was eight years old when he was sent to a concentration camp by the Nazis. He escaped and spent three years hiding in the Ukrainian countryside, probably living much of what he describes in this book. He then joined the Russian army. After the war he went to Palestine (as it was known then) and now lives in Jerusalem. His books are translations from the Hebrew.

I found this book in a small bookstore in Netanya, Israel. I really wanted to find books written by Israeli authors about the Jewish people while in Israel. This book is a sad yet powerful story about a young Eastern European Jewish girl who was abandoned by her own family; endured tremendous hardships seeking refugee amongst local farmers; had a tragic glimpse of love while hiding in the forest during the Holocaust; and, bravely began a new life in Palestine. Appelfeld's brilliant style of writing makes one glued to the pages despite the difficult subject of the book. The book is a celebration of the human spirit and its strong will for survival. I enjoyed it immensely!!!

What do You think about Tzili: The Story Of A Life (1996)?
