Uc Notes From An Accidental Band Geek (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

I think it is really great for a middle reader...not quite ready for YA. Elsie is a likeable character that is obsessed with playing her French horn. To diversify herself for her Shining Birches audition, she must join the band and she has preconceived notions about what it will be like. Until she actually joins and it turns out that band is a lot different than she thought. She goes through growing pains with her parents - who have their own expectations. What makes it even more difficult is the fact that her dad is the premiere French horn player for the BSO. There were a few moments when I was a little confused about why Elsie was in trouble with her friends, but it was minor...as most things in HS are. And her character seemed a little more mature for her age (she is actually the age of an 8th grader), but it wasn't too unbelievable. This is a cute story that I would recommend for a middle grade reader...especially girls who might be involved in band or any other fine arts program. I picked up this one just because it said "band geek". An interesting story told from the perspective of a "serious" french horn player. Elise has plans to go to an elite music program and eventually play for the Boston Symphony Orchestra like her father and grandfather. Just one problem - she needs ensemble work to qualify, and the only thing available is - horrors! - marching band. Not only that, but she must play mellophone in the marching band. Determined to hate the whole thing, over the course of the summer and fall, Elise discovers a different world where the band is greater than the sum of its players.Recommended for gr. 7-12.
