The first book was good, kind of a slow read, but good enough that I read the second one. I was very glad I did. This book was suspenseful and I was unable to put it down. I finished it during the week and didn't have time for a trip to the library. I spent three days worrying about the children. Silly I know, but it does mean I was invested in the characters. To me that is what makes a good book. This is the only book in the series I actually read and did not listen to the audiobook. It is worth picking up for the illustrations. I really enjoyed the addition of the unadoptables to the story line. I still find the parents of both main characters so passive it is frustrating. I think what I like most about this series are the wildwood bandits. It is the child in me that would like to run away with Curtis and become a wildwood bandit as well. Is this the best series ever: no. Is it worth a read: I think so. Of course when you have to prioritize maybe you want to pick the next 5 star rated book on your list.
So well written, vividly imagined, and a great yarn!
