Unfinished Gift, The: A Novel (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a wonderful story about forgiveness, caring, and hope. The characters are easy to love, and a few just beg for a scolding. The transitions and growth is real and bring hope to all of us who want to believe even the worst curmudgeon can change. There's one scene that is worth the purchase of the book in my opinion. Mrs. Firorini's explainanation of her perspective on death to little Patrick is so good. The author's pastoral heart comes through in such a gentle and genuine way--he isn't preachy but the message is clear. And I for one really appreciate it.If I could give this book more than five stars I would. A truly lovely story about life and love in World War II.Patrick is a little boy whose Mother has just died in an accident. His Father is a pilot in England doing bombing raids on Germany. There is one family member left and that is where Patrick is being taken. To stay with a Grandfather he has never met.The characters in this book are interesting. Patrick is a wonderful little boy who feels that his entire life has fallen apart. His Grandfather Ian is a bitter man who has not one iota of love in his heart for anyone. The only person he loved unconditionally was his wife, Ida and she has passed away. There is a young woman who works for Children’s Services who has fallen in love with Patrick because of his wonderful character. He has shown strength and is trying to withstand difficulties until is his Father is returned from the war. There is a lovely next door neighbor who inserts herself into the Grandfather’s life because she is concerned about Patrick’s well being. This is a strongly Christian book. The story takes place around Christmas. .As well as Christmas, there is a great deal of discussion of faith and learning to deal with the death of a loved one.The atmosphere of WWII and descriptions of the conditions on the home front all come together to add to the story. This is a lovely book. At times it is very intense when the Grandfather is showing his anger at life and his general disdain for anyone who might care for him. But, there is a happy ending eventually. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick feel good story.
