Unforgotten Coat, The (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Short, sweet. Not so sure how many kids would pick it up and find in fascinating, but it was an interesting story about two brothers from Mongolia who come to Bootles (UK) to find refuge. I was a little confused by the timing - the narrator tells about these boys that she met in sixth grade, yet she's an adult with her own child now. Nevertheless, she talks about how she used Wikipedia in sixth grade to find out about Mongolia (?). (RCC) The presentation of this book is a delight: I'd never particularly liked the front cover, but another lady who works in my library recommended it to me. But once I'd opened the large-ish hardback, I loved the way it was presented as a notebook with the photos 'stuck in'. The 'Unforgotten Coat' is an enchanting book - I loved the use of photos, and how once you get to the end of the novel, you want to look at them again and see them in a totally new light. I enjoyed how lightly the characters were sketched in the book - it created the feeling that the narrator was remembering events through a foggy haze of memory. I think this book would make a lovely present for a teacher, or anybody else lucky enough to work with kids.

Erg mooi en onnadrukkelijk verhaal over twee vluchtelingenjongens en een Engels meisje.
