Unlikely Friendships : 47 Remarkable Stories From The Animal Kingdom (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
I needed a book to read during short intervals - like while drinking a cup of coffee - and this one was perfect. I learned about animals which I had only seen in zoos, or never knew existed. The stories behind the pairings were touching. Some resulted from loss of their mothers at a very young age or others simply from living nearby. If you are looking for a book to touch your heart that is not a romance novel this will be a perfect choice. Lots of pretty pics, and slightly unlikely stories padded out with some 'aww, aren't they cute'. Some of the stories are fascinating juxtapositions of animals unlikely to associate, whereas many are just serendipity due to being cared for in the same facility. I would recommend this one as a read aloud to a child who is fascinated by animals - it would do nicely as a 'one per night', as I found the sameness of the writing became problematic at the end. There is also a nice detail with the taxonomic detail, which would allow for much discussion with a small child interested in the patterns made.
