Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
When I initially finished this book last night, I had thought it wasn’t all that bad. Of course, there were a few things that had gotten annoying, but the humor and the book’s concept kind of made up for it. However, as the hours went by, I liked it less and less. I’ve now come to realize that this book is basically the condensed adult version of Twilight and maybe even a bit worse. Unlike Twilight, there weren’t any sparkly vampires to deal with (thank god!), but it did still read like something an imaginative kid came up with (minus the sex scenes obviously). Nothing really bad ever happens to the good guys, there is no character development of any kind, and the wording was basic at best. And to top it all off, the story got the same Disney-esque happy ending where everyone got to live happily ever after. Now, I could have lived with all the writing issues had the book not been so rushed. Where Twilight was covered about two-ish years over several books, this one tried to make everything happen in just under a week. For example, the main character was changed by the end of chapter four (that’s less than an hour) and that she was pretty much together with the main guy by page 52 (which was a few hours after meeting him). This of course meant that there wasn’t a lot of extra time for explaining, so the main couple never questioned why they were together so fast. When it finally did come up near the end, the main character’s mom said she had gotten happily married within a day and settled all the concerns. Speaking of the mom, she was one of the most horribly unbelievable (as in bad) characters I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading about. When she finds out her daughter -whom she apparently loves- had been nearly dissected by someone, she says that they probably had a good reason. When she finds out that the person had been someone they had loved and trusted, she says that they should have tried to be closer to them. Come on, really?! No good mother would EVER let that slide no matter who it was. If I ever have kids and someone tried to hurt them like that, I’d hunt them down or at the very least be pissed off. My only good thing to say about the woman is that she readily believed in her daughter. Overall, the book needs a lot of work. It came across as something that was quickly typed up and published in the hopes of making money. Had the author spread it out more and taken the time to convey her characters, this book could have been pretty good. Unfortunately, she ended up with something comparable to Twilight… and god, did I hated that series. I just love Broken Heart series. "Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home" was action packed right from the get go and funny as can be. We are getting to know the charters a little better in each book and new paranormal creatures are showing up.I could not stop laughing when Libby meet Queen Patsy and tried to say the greeting that Patrick told her to say "most royal grand potentate." She just keepet stumbling over the words.
